week one

Photography is such an important art, its a way of capturing memories forever. Photography gave. the world a way of remembering even the smallest moments, its also something anyone anywhere could do and enjoy. Its a way of telling a story through what you see and what you see only, because everyone has their own interpatation. "To collect photographs is to collect the world." “Photographed images do not seem to be statements about the world so much as pieces of it, miniatures of reality that anyone can make or acquire.” Carrie Mae weems used African American subjects in order to help represent them in art/photography which they have been misrepresented since the beginning. Weems work also reflects her strong believe in women empowerment in how her subjects where women doing regular activities while not carring for the spectator. Her work is full of strong female characters. I believe her photo series showed the amount of roles that women took in life and thats why in each photo you can see a women teaching the child several different things that mean alot to growing up into a women. "Weems’s black-and-white photographs are like mirrors, each reflecting a collective experience: how selfhood shifts through passage of time; the sudden distance between people, both passable and impassable; the roles that women accumulate and oscillate between; how life emanates from the small space we occupy in the world" “It’s not just Black women; it’s white women, Asian women. Men can see the women in their lives—memories from their childhood or scenes from their marriage or their family life. It’s so universal and yet representation like this is so rare.”
