Week 5

  1. “As a test run suggests, they will sometimes reflect sunlight with spooky intensity, in what Ms. Mutu calls it ‘a stunning message from beyond.’” Art can carry so mean meanings and interpretations but only the artist knows its true message and why the art is the way it is. Art creates noise just like religious retuals or theater because of the way people connect to the art.

  2. “That is, women express “wealth, status, family, tribe” through their bearing and ornamentation, which are “all languages definable as art.” The female body is the art itself. The beauty of women’s bodies has been the inspiration behind many art works to many artists including Mutu. However, history has placed women’s bodies as just subjects for painting.

  3. Short description MoMA: One of her collage diptchys is called Yo mama which she dedicates to Funmilayo Anikulapo-Kuti. For the diptchy she used the biblical Eve by putting a snake over the shoulder of an African American woman with its head cut off while stepping on the snake’s detach head with her stiletto boot. This is Mutu’s version of Eve’s biblical story, and unlike the original where the serpent was Eve’s downfall in the diptchy an African version of Eve did not give into tempation and took a bite of the apple but dicapacitated the serpent.

  4. “Mutu is best known for spectacular and provocative collages depicting female figures.” Mutu’s inspiration behind her art works are women’s bodies. Her art reflects on sexuality, feminism, polotics, and society views on women. Her focus is American Americam women and how they were and are treated by the world.
