“Her work has in some ways presaged the media age that we live in now and also absolutely responds to it,” says MoMA photography curator Eva Respini. I could not agree more. We see a lot more creativity in photos, art and even fashion now. She is an obvious pioneer in her space and has inspired many after her. "We live in the era of YouTube fame and reality-TV shows and makeovers, where you can be anything you want to be any minute of the day, and artists are responding to that. Cindy was one of the first to explore the idea of the malleability or fluidity of identity.” Identity is something that society has normalized and even changed in a way. It is now acceptable to not be defined by society norms with things such as the LGBTQ+ community and even gender fluidity. Cindy has truly left her mark on the world and it shows. These two self portraits were taken in two different stages in my life. I realized I had taken a picture years ago and never uploaded it on social media but I thought this was a good place to put it. It is similar to an Untitled Film Stills portrait that she did years back. As well as the second photo which showed her in a dressed up character which I was in this self portrait as well. Cindy was breaking the barriers of the art world back then and we have only grown more with it.
