GALLERY RESPONSE ESSAY 1

The Laurie Riccadonna Throw-Away painting tries to provide a reflection on plastic debris collection and plastic pollution. Although, this painting could be interpreted in different ways. The picture of plastic debris could be titled, 'Nothing last forever. Regardless of our life, career, or business exploits, each moment is meant to be enjoyed because Nothing lasts forever. Plastic was once a useful and vital item in the household, but it becomes useless after exceeding or elapsing its usefulness. Another interpretation or theme could be, 'plastic pollution because the paint shows many and different small pieces of plastic waste. The increasing plastic waste is because of the increasing human population. However, the artist/author's creativity in converting the waste into a beautiful painting shows that waste can still be converted or recycled into new products such as fertilizer, plastic toys, polyethene bags, etc. the author's ability to draw a variety of smaller items shows that she wants the viewer to look the paint with tactile attention. This indicates that a small accumulation of waste materials can result in a larger mass of waste that could become a major issue or pollution in our society.

The Margaret Murphy flowers in vases are the third image. I think the flower's ability to flourish in the vases instead of soil portrays self-maintenance and forgettable acts of bodily survival. The varieties of flowers and colour could be used to describe or represent another thing. Typically, the yellow paint on the painting could be used to portray optimism, happiness, positivity, and loyalty, while the white colour could mean innocence, respect, feelings of sympathy, condolence, and purity. However, the black on the background could be used to represent anger and sadness. This is why the paint was used during Black Lives Matter.

"You can't make a photograph without the entire history of Cindy Sherman's oeuvre behind it," The work of Nakeya Brown could not be credited without referencing Cindy Sherman. Her work is similar to Cindy's work because Nakeya also tries to use photography to spread her message or ideas to the public. "A number of younger artists are very much indebted to Sherman in their exploration of not just identity but also the nature of representation. Now we all take it for granted that a photograph can be Photoshopped. We live in the era of YouTube fame and reality-TV shows and makeovers, where you can be anything you want to be any minute of the day, and artists are responding to that. Cindy was one of the first to explore the idea of the malleability or fluidity of identity." The Nakeya Brown photographic series reflects the black life, beauty, and women's narratives. The photographer uses her work to explore black womanhood through hair. I think the pictures portray powerful messages about black or African American women and feminism. Cindy could be seen as a role model for Nakeya Brown because she also uses pictures to portray or represent her ideas. The work of Nakeya on Xpression is all about Black Africa or African American women. The flowers in the pictures are a representation of the beauty, peace, and good moral value of African women. Beauty would not have been possible without the items placed in the form of the pictures (comb and rollers). "Cindy Sherman opened a lot of the doors. She was the trendsetter in terms of distorted characters within self-portraiture. Originally painters painted self-portraits, and then she blew it open with photographic portraiture. Now there are all these avenues younger artists take, which would not have been so easy without her work."
