Susan Sontang’s excerpt from On Photography
Quote:
“Finally, the most grandiose result of the photographic enterprise is to give us the sense that we can hold the whole world in our heads -- as an anthology of images.”
Response:
This quote stands out to me, because it is true, the way we use images is as a collection. Every image we take is a collection of our memories and our past. It really does feel as if we do have the whole world with these images, we are able to capture what we want.
Quote:
“Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it.”
Response:
This quote also stands out to me because photographs really show us evidence especially when it comes to our generation now where we find things out whether they are good or bad through images. Sometimes we do not want to believe something unless we see photographic evidence.
Revisiting Carrie Mae Weem’s Landmark “Kitchen Table Series” by Jacqui Palumbo
Quote:
“It’s not just Black women; it’s white women, Asian women. Men can see the women in their lives—memories from their childhood or scenes from their marriage or their family life. It’s so universal and yet representation like this is so rare.”
Response:
This quote stuck out to me as this is a series which can be related to any woman and any man. People can see this image series and see themselves in it or see the women in their lives and be able to relate to it. This helps to represent all women throughout the world.
Quote:
“This woman can stand in for me and for you; she can stand in for the audience, she leads you into history. She’s a witness and a guide,”
Response:
This quote also stands out to me as it mentions the woman can be anyone woman out there and can show us ourselves. This quote also shows representation for all women.
