Susan Sontag excerpt from On Photography
Quote #1
"To collect photographs is to collect the world."
Response #1
The meaning of this quote caught my attention, since every time we take a picture in a different place is like we are traveling the world and collecting memories. When you collect photographs, is like you are saving memories from every where you were forever.
Quote #2
" Photographs really are experience captured, and the camera is the ideal arm of consciousness in its acquisitive mood."
Response #2
I think this one of the most beautiful and well constructed sentences from this reading, as soon as I read it I automatically had a picture of the sentence in my head. It's a beautiful metaphor from Susan, who provides the reader with a imagery in their head that explains what is the reading about with one sentence.
Revisiting Carrie Mae Weems's Landmark "Kitchen Table Series"\
Quote #1
"Weems’s black-and-white photographs are like mirrors, each reflecting a collective experience: how selfhood shifts through passage of time; the sudden distance between people, both passable and impassable; the roles that women accumulate and oscillate between; how life emanates from the small space we occupy in the world."
Response #1
I definitely agree with this quote, since Weems's photographs alone tells the story of her past experiences. Weems's does a great job showing how impactful women are to their family, even though is not always shown to them. The whole "The Kitchen Table Series" is a strong series that demonstrates the importance of women.
Quote #2
"“Everyone can relate to this work,” Sann said. “It’s not just Black women; it’s white women, Asian women. Men can see the women in their lives—memories from their childhood or scenes from their marriage or their family life. It’s so universal and yet representation like this is so rare.”
Response #2
"Weems's "The Kitchen Table Series", shows is not about women and their race is more about women in general and the experiences the go through. Like the quote says it's very rare to see a representation like this but it's so universal how women see their memories from their lives.
